Why Green?

I remember the first time I heard about nuclear power; I was nine. I had just seen the China Syndrome and couldn’t believe that humans would create machines, factories, or anything that could potentially cause so much harm to humans and all life. It just didn’t make any sense to me, and still doesn’t. But now I’m an adult and I have a larger context for human actions and choices, and while I understand them, I still don’t agree or choose to live by them—or at least I try not to.

In today’s world, we’ve created products and a way of living that literally harm the planet and ourselves. We have factories spewing toxins in our air; we use chemicals to feed our lawns and food, and chemicals to remove pests. We drive cars that pollute our air, water, and soil. We lather our bodies in chemicals, clean homes with them, and feed our children them. We are laden with chemicals. Thousands.

But there are answers and ways to live more in harmony with the planet. The latest green revolution is upon us, and global warming is just one assault among thousands getting our attention and vying for change.

The easiest way to make a difference is not through politics, activism, or religion. The easiest way to effect change is through the day-to-day, the way you live. The simpler, the better. The less you consume, the less you pollute. Re-use, Re-cycle, Renew. These are not slogans; they are tenets for living. When you realize that every action impacts everything and everyone, than every action becomes a meditation or a chance to be fully awake, conscious.

Today is a time for a new way, a way of conscious living: where what you think, say, and do are delivered with gentleness and care. Today is the time for people to live green, a time to make choices and take actions that do not add more pollutants, garbage, and chemicals, but rather are in line with nature and the planet.

A year or so ago, my husband and I began a greener way of life. It feels great to know that we are no longer using and polluting with abandon. Below, I hope to help you begin (or continue) being greener by learning about what you can do and how you can change. The websites below offer many resources to help you make a greener life. I hope you’ll join us in becoming more awake, more conscious, and more conscientious. This is not for me, or you-- it’s for all of us-- the entire planet and its many amazing creatures. Being green is about compassion for all life. This is the time for that compassion.

Thank you, Gretchen
