CFS is a Call For Soulwork : About the Book

Do you feel like nobody understands?
… Nobody cares?
… And there is no hope…?

With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) it is easy to feel this way. I know because I did. Or, at least I did for the first several years I had CFS.

My CFS Journey
My first year with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome began as a student on the road (both figuratively and literally) to becoming a psychotherapist. While driving to Antioch New England Graduate School, a fatigue swept over me, one so strong it forced me off the road. This was the beginning of my dealings with an illness that overtook my life, and became my life: an illness not readily understood, accepted, or visible to the naked eye— an illness of complexity, elusivity, and enormity.

When CFS became my life, all I wanted was to be well and continue my life and studies. But CFS seemed to have a different agenda. Suddenly, everything changed, stopped, and there I was: a woman once energetic, enthusiastic and driven, now overcome with symptoms, taken by a fatigue enveloping every facet of her being, and unable to do anything except attempt to heal.

When CFS became my life, my life forever changed. At first I hated the changes and I hated CFS. CFS was the robber of all that was good in my life, and I, its captor. Over time, however, my feelings and experience within my illness began to change, my perspective softened, and new ways of viewing my illness emerged. ( For more, read About Author )

I think the changes began as I stepped out from the confines of illness and attempted to heal myself by taking a class entitled: Heal Thyself. That began my journey from experiencing CFS as merely a physical, all-encompassing, life-robbing illness to experiencing it as a spiritual journey. Then came my early morning muse in the form of insomnia. Each morning, around three, I would awaken to suffocating heat and tear off everything on and around me. For hours, I would lay in bed unable to return to slumber. But soon, instead of simply laying there, concepts and messages came through me, and as I thought, so I wrote. What emerged were messages of the hopeful side of CFS, the possibilities of its teachings, and my abilities to heal myself.

CFS is a Call For Soulwork is the result of that early morning muse. This book shares my stories of struggle, loss, trauma, and ultimately, triumph. Through Call For Soulwork you learn how to view CFS as I did, not solely as the robber it appears, but also as the teacher. As you read, I pray you find comfort in the messages of understanding, caring, and above all, hope. CFS, though a master of defeat, is also a gift of teaching. You will learn to take the Call For Soulwork journey teaching you to value yourself, embrace illness, decide to heal, connect with nature and the Divine, and “be.”

There are hundreds of CFS books out there, and over a million websites. Ten years ago when CFS was my life, there were probably one-tenth the resources. What does this tell you about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome? It should tell you:

CFS is real.
CFS is serious.
CFS is prevalent.
CFS changes lives.
CFS deserves respect.
People want answers.

Most CFS books I have read do everything they can to help with the physical aspects of the illness, providing suggested treatments and remedies. While this is an important aspect of your healing, I think it misses the depth of CFS, or any chronic illness—the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of having a disease.

CFS is a Call For Soulwork acts like a good friend, taking your hand and walking with you through your journey of healing. Rather than simply focus on the physical aspects of your illness, Call For Soulwork enters into the holistic, exploring the energy of CFS, what it means, its impact on a deep level, and how CFS can help you be more of who you want to be.

When I woke up feeling overheated, but inspired by my early morning muse, I didn’t know then I was writing a book. Yet, I did know the words that helped me had the potential to help others. And that is my hope and my desire for you: that you will find the support you lack, the inspiration you need, and the journey you deserve.

CFS does not have to be the end of everything good in your life. In fact, it can be the beginning to a new life, one filled with possibility. You can heal, and you can realize the best of who you are even as you lay in bed, unable to move a muscle. That is the message of

CFS is a Call For Soulwork.

May you be blessed on your healing journey,
